Goettingen: City of science and research

Goettingen (Germany), the city of science and research, is recognised around the world for top international research and innovation. It is characterised by the high number and close proximity of research institutions across the Goettingen Campus – both inside and outside the University – linked together by inspiring and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Important foundations of modern aviation were researched in Goettingen, and the city is regarded as the cradle of modern aerodynamics. It was here in 1907 that the world‘s first national aeronautical research facility was founded. Furthermore, Ludwig Prandtl developed the boundary layer theory here, Hans Joachim Pabst von Ohain tested the precursor of the first jet engine and researchers invented the swept wing, a prerequisite for high-speed cruise flight.

For example, more than 20 wind tunnels and large-scale research facilities are available for experimental investigations, including unique facilities worldwide. In addition, DLR Goettingen operates the largest mobile ground vibration test facility in Europe.

Travelling to Goettingen: How to reach the city

By plane: The nearest airport is Hannover, but you will often find cheaper tickets to fly into Frankfurt International Airport. Hannover Airport has regular train connections to Goettingen (with transfer at Hannover central train station). Frankfurt Airport has its own train station with direct train connections to Goettingen (however some train connections require a transfer at Frankfurt central train station). Travelling by plane within Germany is generally not practical, as this often takes more time than taking the train.

By train: Most IC (Intercity) and ICE (Intercity Express) trains on the North/South, East/West routes stop in Goettingen. There is a direct train from Frankfurt Airport. Train Travel Planner (by "Deutsche Bahn") to Station: "Goettingen"

By car: Goettingen is located directly off the 'Autobahn' A7, a major north to south motorway between Hannover and Kassel. There are two Goettingen exits. Please consult a map for the most convenient exit.
